BANGOR, Maine (WABI) – For over 10 years the Bangor Symphony Orchestra has had a music and wellness program where musicians will play in healthcare facilities around the Queen City.

On May 29, the public got a taste of that.

A free concert took place at the Wabanaki Health and Wellness Center in Downtown Bangor.

All members of the community were invited to hear the sounds usually played by the BSO in healthcare settings.

The music director and conductor said it’s a great way to take the music out of the concert hall and bring it into the community.

The tunes heard focused on the fact that music can be a healing force.

“It’s hard to know what exactly a patient or a family member or doctor wants to hear in the moment of being in the hospital so our musicians are very flexible and have a huge catalog of things that one day might be very appropriate but the next day they say you know what that’s not what I’m feeling,” said Lucas Richman. “The mood changes.”

The BSO is currently having an ongoing program a few times a month with St. Joe’s Hospital.

Other community supporters of this program include Versant Power, Northeast Delta Dental, and a grant from the city of Bangor commission on cultural development.
